Full Time Cancer Nurse Specialist

is Seeking a 
Full Time Cancer Nurse Specialist.

Purpose:
This nurse specialist position will serve as a recognized resource for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer. This position provides expert clinical consultation and technical assistance in the areas of primary care, prevention of disease, screening, early detection and treatment of breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers. Consultation is provided to support administration of complex public health programs including the MI Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program (BCCCNP) and the MI Colorectal Cancer Early Detection Program (CRCEDP).

Qualifications/Requirements:
Education:  Possession of a bachelor’s degree in any major, including nursing and related health professions.  A current Michigan license as a registered nurse is required.  Certification as an oncology nurse through the Oncology Nursing Society is desirable.  A Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a healthcare field is also desirable but not required.

Experience:  Four or more years of professional experience in clinical specialization, teaching, supervision, administration or consultation with responsibilities related to oncology, public health nursing, and/or health education.  Clinical care experience as an oncology nurse or Family Nurse Practitioner is desirable.

Important Skills and Characteristics:  Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be independent but able to work well in team situations.  Self-motivated, able to complete work in timely manner, and handle multiple task at one time with minimal supervision.  In addition, must be able to manage complex projects and possess effective problem-solving skills.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, preparing presentations, and familiarity with email/internet browser software is needed.  Must have thorough knowledge of clinical nursing principles and be able to provide expert clinical nursing consultation to health care agencies and professionals in local communities throughout Michigan. Must have the ability to analyze and interpret complex clinical/health care related data, and to plan, develop, and promote strategies to address deficits in local/regional service delivery.  Must have the ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple concurrent responsibilities.  Prefer knowledge of Michigan health care systems.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:  Work location will be at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in the Cancer Prevention and Control Section currently at the Washington Square Building, 109 Michigan Avenue, Lansing, Michigan.  Standard office environment requires use of computer and fax as well as capability of communicating with other offices and agencies via telephone conferencing and electronic mail.  Some travel outside of the Lansing area may be required to complete assigned tasks and to coordinate activities with various cancer control partners.  Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <50# and involves viewing an LED or VDT screen 25% to 75% of the time. Does require valid vehicle operator’s license and limited travel within Michigan to provide training.
