YesRx, the nonprofit organization repurposing donated cancer medications and making them available to patients for free, is welcoming Henry Ford Health as the newest partner in the YesRx mission.
Since its founding in June 2023, YesRx has woven together cancer care teams statewide across the YesRx Network to improve access to oral cancer medication and eliminate cancer medication waste via the Michigan Cancer Drug Repository program (CDR). People may donate unused, unopened oral cancer medication and supportive cancer medication to the CDR. The medications are redistributed to clinicians across Michigan for their patients. YesRx helps patients who are unable to afford their medication, denied insurance coverage for the medication, or waiting for medications that are in short supply.
Based in Detroit, Henry Ford Health primarily serves patients across southeast and central Michigan, providing a full continuum of primary, preventative, and specialty care. Henry Ford Cancer, the organization’s cancer care arm, delivers one-of-a-kind treatments carefully crafted and tailored for each of its patients at 20 treatment sites across the area.
“We are excited about this opportunity to team up with YesRx to further support cancer patients across Michigan,” said Henry Ford Health Chief Pharmacy Officer Jennifer Tryon. “Through this partnership we are helping to prevent delays in critical treatment for patients who might otherwise face financial or access barriers.”
Individuals who want to donate unused, unopened oral cancer medications can do so at any Henry Ford Health location. Henry Ford Health’s network of outpatient pharmacies will forward the donated medications to the central YesRx repository, where they will be redistributed to patients across Michigan.
“It is so comforting to know that patients have another option available to assist them especially in the early phase of their treatment when anxiety can be very high. I have also had several patients comment on how grateful they are to be able to donate their unused meds and help someone else,” said Dr. Jo Ann Hirth, Medical Oncologist at Henry Ford Hematology and Oncology Jackson, the first Henry Ford Health practice to access YesRx for patients.
