ASCO’s May 2026 Coding Tip of the Month: RTM Codes

A recent article in JCO Oncology Practice from the OncoPro ePRO Learning Collaborative highlights how remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) codes allow oncology practices to report the monitoring of non-physiological data such as medication adherence and treatment response. Using electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) to monitor symptoms may be particularly valuable for patients on high-risk immunotherapies, such as BiTE and CAR-T cell therapies.

Practices should focus on code 98975 for initial setup and patient education, and codes 98979, 98980, and 98981 for ongoing monthly management of the monitoring results. While Medicare generally covers these services, private payer coverage and frequency limits vary, so always verify individual plan policies before enrolling patients in a monitoring program.
