Jerome Seid, M.D.

Jerome E. Seid, M.D., was born in New York City.  He has been with Great Lakes Cancer Management Specialists since 2000, where his focus is GU malignancies, but has a broad practice including benign and malignant hematology.  Prior to joining Great Lakes, Jerome lived in Pittsburgh, PA where he had been in private practice in hematology and oncology for more than six years.

Dr. Seid began his undergraduate training at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island before completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at the University of Michigan.  Dr. Seid then received a Masters of Science degree in Toxicology from the University of Michigan, Rackham School of Graduate Studies.  He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at Wayne State University in 1987, then moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he finished his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University.  Returning to Ann Arbor, Dr. Seid undertook his subspecialty training in hematology and oncology at the University of Michigan, completing his studies in 1993. During his fellowship, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Young Investigator Upjohn Research Award.   He remained on the faculty at the University of Michigan for a year before relocating to Pennsylvania. Dr. Seid maintained an active role as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, teaching medical and nursing students, residents and fellows.

While in Pittsburgh, Jerome served as one of the Medical Directors of the Forbes Hospice. He has maintained this strong interest in the teaching of end of life issues to colleagues, physicians in training and students of medicine and nursing. He served as a change agent for the Project on Death in America.  He is board certified in hospice/palliative care and continues with this mission as the Medical Director of the Hospice of Henry Ford Macomb Division.

Dr. Seid is active on various hospital cancer and medical committees.  He currently serves on the Cancer Committee of St. John Macomb Hospital as the Liaison to the American College of Surgeons.  His hospital affiliations also include St. John Hospital & Medical Center, William Beaumont Hospital (Grosse Pointe) and Henry Ford Hospital, (Clinton Township). Dr. Seid is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Hematology.  Dr. Seid has been recognized by his colleagues as one of “The Best Doctors in America”.

When asked about his personal life Dr. Seid said, “My best work has been to find a loving, supportive wife so willing to endure my long hours, high standards and sometimes irascible demeanor. My 3 children (a 21 yr. old son currently at MSU and twin 15 yr. old daughters) continue to provide me challenges, immense joy and the continued opportunity to see life through their eyes - a welcome respite after a day in the oncology office.”

In spite of his many clinical responsibilities, Jerome is always up for new adventures.  Fly fishing is his passion, including travel to exotic locales including Argentina, Bahamas, Alaska, Nova Scotia, Montana, New Mexico to stalk trout, salmon and other species.  Of course, nothing compares to the wealth of fishing in Michigan, which he loves so dearly.

“Serving on the Board of Directors of MSHO has been a growing highlight of my career. As the incoming president, I welcome the opportunity to champion the interests of the oncology community of which I have long been a part. Most of all, I intend to advocate for the patients who provide us with daily reminders of the blessings we practitioners have been afforded, especially the gift of being invited into their lives so we can be sources of strength, hope and compassion for them.”
