Hirva Mamdani, M.D.
Dr. Mamdani grew up in India and earned her medical degree from M. P. Shah Medical College, where she also met the love of her life. Together, they moved to the United States, where she completed her Internal Medicine residency at Wayne State University before pursuing a Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Indiana University, where she also served as the Chief Fellow. After getting married, she returned to Michigan to join the Karmanos Cancer Institute as a thoracic medical oncologist, while her husband, Dipen Modi, MD, also an oncologist specializing in lymphoma treatment,
joined Karmanos as well.
Dr. Mamdani’s clinical and research focus is on the treatment of lung cancer, and she leads multiple clinical trials aimed at bringing new treatment options to patients. She also heads the thoracic multidisciplinary team and is an active member of the Phase I Therapeutics Program, working at the forefront of early-phase clinical research. In 2024, she joined the MSHO Board of Directors, inspired by its mission to support oncologists and hematologists in Michigan. She considers it an honor to collaborate with esteemed colleagues who bring a wealth of experience and dedication to advancing patient care, advocating for policies that improve patient access to cancer treatments, and enhancing educational opportunities for oncologists across the state.
Additionally, as a member of the MSHO Young Professional Committee, Dr. Mamdani is passionate about mentoring and supporting trainees pursuing careers in Hematology/Oncology.
Beyond medicine, Hirva and Dipen share a love for travel and hiking, with a goal of visiting as many national parks as possible. Their most recent adventure took them to Banff National Park, and next on their list is the Dolomites! Hirva is also a devoted Harry Potter fan - she has read all the books, listened to the audiobooks multiple times, and visited the theme parks on several occasions.
